Within the hard-to-abate shipping sector, the transition to alternative fuels is crucial. During this critical interim period, we are proactively addressing emissions from our existing fleet by exploring carbon capture solutions — both on board ships and on land.

Carbon Capture & Storage

CCS systems are designed to capture carbon emissions from the exhaust gases — converting the captured carbon into liquid or solid form for secure storage and in some cases, used as a raw material in other applications.

In 2025, we installed a carbon capture system on board the Berge Yotei, a 63,000dwt Ultramax vessel. This system intercepts CO2 from the exhaust stream before it exits the funnel. Once fully operational, the system will be capable of capturing 15 tonnes of CO2 per day — potentially reducing voyage emissions by up to 30%.

Distinct from conventional scrubbers, the carbon capture system removes both sulphur oxides (SOx) and CO2. The captured carbon is absorbed into a reusable amine solution, which can be offloaded in port for regeneration or repurposed for industrial applications, such as greenhouse enrichment and beverage production. This process directly supports a circular carbon economy by transforming waste into a valuable resource.

With accelerating global momentum behind CCS, we remain optimistic about its rapid scalability. By engaging early-stage innovators and maintaining robust dialogue with industry leaders, Berge Bulk stays at the forefront of this fast-evolving sector.

Planting 25 Million Trees

Berge Bulk has committed to planting at least 25 million trees — most of which will be native species mangrove trees.

Mangrove Forests — Vital ecosystems

Mangrove forests — made up of trees growing in the tidal waters of coastal wetlands where the land and sea meet — play several critical roles in tropical and subtropical regions and providing livelihoods to coastal communities. With the highest carbon density of all terrestrial ecosystems, mangroves absorb and store carbon at a rate that is four times greater than terrestrial forests.

In 2025, we reached a significant milestone by surpassing 20 million trees planted — moving us closer to our target.

Building a Global Portfolio of Carbon Credits

In a hard-to-abate sector like shipping, we believe that carbon mitigation projects play a critical role alongside our aggressive efforts to decarbonise our operations.

We have built a global portfolio of carbon credits from projects in places that are closest to the hearts of our customers and colleagues: Brazil, Australia, India, China, Philippines, Indonesia, and beyond.

Our carbon credit portfolio includes projects to plant new trees and protect against deforestation; projects that produce renewable energy; and projects that work with low-income communities to reduce emissions in their way of life.

Offering Clients Carbon Offset Delivery

Our Carbon Offset Delivery programme, offers customers a simple and effective way to offset the CO2 emissions of their cargo delivery.

Through this programme, we offset the carbon emissions of the voyage with high-grade carbon credits. Upon completing the voyage, we issue customers a certificate of retirement as evidence that the corresponding number of carbon credits have been retired to offset the voyage emissions.

Offsetting Our Emissions

We take a balanced approach to climate action by pursuing operational emissions reductions while supporting high-quality environmental attributes to address emissions that are currently difficult to eliminate.

In 2025, we offset 100% of our Scope 1 emissions, as well as 100% of air travel emissions associated with both our seafarers and shore-based employees. We also supported renewable electricity generation through the purchase of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) from a solar facility in Singapore, covering 100% of our Singapore office electricity consumption.

As a founding member of Green Fuel Forward, we also began using Sustainable Aviation Fuel certificates (SAFc) to address emissions from corporate air travel. During 2025, we purchased and retired SAFc equivalent to 5% of our corporate air travel emissions for the year.

These SAFc were retired on a book-and-claim basis and complement our broader use of environmental attribute certificates across Scope 1, Scope 2 and selected Scope 3 emission sources. Together, these measures support our wider decarbonisation strategy as we continue working to reduce emissions across our operations and value chain.
