Cadet progression programme…

Developing tomorrow’s leaders…

The Cadet Progression Programme (CPP) is a structured development programme designed to support the professional growth and competency development of Cadets throughout their seafaring careers.

The programme combines technical simulator and trainer-based training with Human Element and Behavioural Competency development. This integrated approach enables Cadets to strengthen their technical knowledge, practical skills, and professional behaviours in a controlled and supportive training environment.

The CPP is aligned with Berge Bulk’s values, safety culture, and operational standards, with emphasis on developing competent, confident, responsible, and safety-conscious seafarers.

The Cadet Progression Programme aims to

  • Develop Cadets’ technical knowledge and practical competencies through simulator and trainer-based training.
  • Strengthen communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills.
  • Develop leadership and decision-making capabilities appropriate to the Cadet’s level of responsibility.
  • Promote a strong safety mindset and safe working practices.
  • Develop awareness of human factors and their impact on safe and effective operations.
  • Encourage professional conduct, accountability, and personal responsibility.
  • Promote diversity, respect, and effective collaboration within a multicultural shipboard environment.
  • Support Cadets’ physical and mental wellness and overall personal development.
  • Prepare Cadets for increased responsibilities and future progression within the maritime profession.

Structured Learning Model

The programme follows a structured two-pillar model CPP Pre-Sea and CPP Promotion.

As part of the programme, each cadet is paired with an experienced mentor. Through this mentorship component, mentors share their personal experiences and valuable insights into life on board, helping cadets navigate the challenges of seafaring and supporting their professional and personal development.

The CPP is based on the principle that technical competence and human performance are equally important to safe and successful shipboard operations.

This balanced approach helps Cadets apply sound judgement, work effectively with others, and adapt to the life and work at sea. It also provides a clear foundation for progression into officer roles, enabling Cadets to contribute to safe, reliable operations across Berge Bulk’s fleet.

“During CPP 1, I gained valuable lessons — particularly in Safety Management and Risk Assessment — and I’ve been applying what I learnt right from day one. My goal is to have a long-term career, right through to retirement, with Berge Bulk, as the company has met my expectations regarding its management and onboard safety standards.”
