Poised for an exciting future…

Berge Bulk is a global leader in dry bulk shipping. Renowned for our ambitious, progressive and innovative thinking, we proudly serve the major miners, steel mills and charterers worldwide.

Built upon a strong heritage, we now have a robust fleet of 90 vessels, with further fleet expansion on the horizon. Ranging from handy-size to cape-size, our fleet is one of the most modern and efficient at sea.

We’re leading by example!

Leading the industry in our commitment to pilot and scale decarbonisation technologies, Berge Bulk wholeheartedly embraces our environmental responsibility. We fastidiously retrofit vessels, constantly improving operational efficiency. Collaboration is key, and we partner with both charterers and technology suppliers to foster industry-wide progress..

We are proud to be surging ahead in our industry — embracing change and staying up-to-date with the evolving landscape.

Examples of exciting new technologies include:

Rigid Wing Sails…

In 2023, Berge Bulk collaborated with industry partners BAR Technologies and Yara Marine to launch the world’s most powerful sailing cargo ship, Berge Olympus. The WindWings on Berge Olympus are 37.5m tall and 20m wide, with a total surface area of 3,000m2 — more than three times the surface area of the wings of an A380 airplane (843m2).

Flettner Rotor Sails…

We are currently piloting Flettner Rotor Sails on the Berge Neblina to optimise their design and explore additional applications in renewable energy. These advanced cylindrical sails harness wind power to enhance propulsion by utilising the Magnus Effect, where rotating cylinders generate “lift”. By incorporating these rotor sails, the Berge Neblina reduces reliance on its main engine, improves fuel efficiency and significantly decreases carbon emissions.

Advanced Wayfinder Technology…

Sofar Ocean’s Wayfinder platform enhances maritime operations by combining real-time weather data with vessel performance models to optimise routes. Using a network of ocean sensors, it delivers accurate forecasts, allowing ships to navigate safer and more fuel-efficient routes. This tool helps us reduce fuel consumption, lower emissions and make informed decisions, supporting our commitment to decarbonisation and sustainability goals.

We are also pioneering new fuels such as biofuel, methanol and ammonia:

Ammonia powered ships…

Ammonia is a promising zero-carbon fuel for the future of the shipping industry and Berge Bulk recently placed an order for two new ammonia powered ships. The two 210,000-DWT Newcastlemax vessels will be delivered in 2027 and will meet the IMO’s Tier III NOx standards and EEDI Phase 3 compliance for greenhouse gas emissions.
