Environmental awareness and biodiversity are key to Berge Bulk’s operations. We recognise the importance of research, preservation and education, and our philanthropic support is channelled accordingly.
By supporting and working with charities and organisations that concentrate on protecting the environment, the Marshall Foundation helps us to keep biodiversity at the heart of our business. With projects such as education, protection of endangered species and scientific research, the reach is broad.
Through our philanthropic support in the Philippines, we are also able to engage with our employees and their families — reiterating the ethos of protecting the planet to our whole workforce.
The Stairway Foundation
The Stairway Foundation is a charity based in the Philippines that delivers a wide range of community service activities — including environmental awareness and protection programmes. The Marshall Foundation supports their Sea Adventure School — funding the construction of a boat, the “Berge Apo”, which serves as a floating classroom. The Berge Apo takes local school children to different sites around the beautiful Puerto Galera Bay, and they learn first-hand about important marine ecosystems such as coral reefs, seagrass, and mangroves. As part of the experience, participants clean up local mangrove forests, which have become congested with rubbish from nearby villages and tourist destinations washing in from the sea.
Over 12,000 people have participated in the Sea Adventure School to date and the school has been endorsed by the Philippines’ National Department of Education as an official part of the science class curriculum among high school students in the district.

WildAid
WildAid is an international environmental organisation that works to reduce the global consumption of wildlife products, and to increase local support for conservation efforts. WildAid delivers a simple but powerful message: “When the buying stops, the killing can too.”
WildAid partners with governments and local organisations to achieve its goals, raising public and political will to stop the poaching of endangered animals. WildAid has worked to protect fragile marine reserves from illegal fishing and to reduce the demand for shark fins.
The Marshall Foundation has supported WildAid since 2015 — funding multimedia campaigns designed to reduce demand for various marine species, including manta rays, sharks, and sea turtles, as well as for rhino horn and tiger products. In 2025 the Foundation supported work to develop a Porpoise Excluder Device for use in China, to allow the endangered East Asian Finless Porpoise to escape from fishing nets there.

The John Innes Foundation
The John Innes Foundation is a leading independent charity dedicated to advancing plant and microbial science through infrastructure, education, and research. Based at the Norwich Research Park in the UK, the Foundation provides the essential resources and strategic funding required to address global challenges in food security, human health, and environmental sustainability. By stewarding world-class laboratory facilities and nurturing the next generation of scientists, it bridges the gap between fundamental discovery and real-world agricultural innovation.
In 2025, the Marshall Foundation agreed to start supporting the John Innes Foundation to fund vital research into crop resilience and soil biodiversity. This partnership empowers scientists to develop sustainable solutions for a changing climate, ensuring the protection of the planet’s genetic diversity and the long-term health of our global food systems.
